The Asian Coordinating Group for Chemistry (ACGC) which is convened by UNESCO holds its meetings at the beginning of each year. The purpose of ACGC is to facilitate cooperation between the various networks, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations which have active programs in the chemical sciences in the Asian region. Cooperation with activities in the other basic sciences is also encouraged.
ACGC is now a source of information for the individual member organizations and a forum for initiating cooperative action to develop chemistry and allied sciences in Asia. All of the activities encouraged by ACGC take place in the developing countries of Asia and involve both regional cooperation and self help.
Research being undertaken by the networks concerned with the chemistry of natural products analytical chemistry and inorganic chemistry, is now flourishing. In addition, the networks dealing with instrument maintenance, which were established following the recommendations of ACGC, can now ensure the effectiveness of the analytical services program. The networks relating to Botany 2000 and the provision of information on medicinal and aromatic plants furnish the necessary back-up facilities for active research groups involved in the study of natural products.
The close cooperation achieved by the various agencies through ACGC is now leading to projects which are working examples of the sustainable development of chemistry in the hands of regional research workers.
