The Introduction of the Tenth Asian Chemical Congress

By the tradition of FACS, the Tenth Asian Chemical Congress will be held this year in Vietnam.

At the beginning of the year of 2001, the Executive Board of FACS came to Hanoi to inspect the necessary condition and approved of CSV organizing this Conference. On this occasion, the Chemical Society of Vietnam will host the Eighth Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences and carry out the Fourth National Chemical Congress.

The time of those conferences are following:

  • The Fourth National Chemical Congress: October 20, 2003
  • The 10-ACC and EuAsC2S-8 (organized co-operatively): October 21- 24, 2003.

The venue of the conferences: Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi. This is one of the biggest and the most comfortable hotel with the beautiful panorama.

The fact that 3 conferences will be organized co-operatively shows not only the effort of the Chemical Society of Vietnam in particular and Vietnamese scientists in general but also the high appreciation of Vietnam ability and condition to organize such great scientific conferences.

Towards the 10ACC, the International Advisory Board, the National Advisory Committee and the National Organization Committee have founded and gone into action since the beginning of the year 2001.

So far, the Agenda of 10 ACC includes:

  • 8 plenary lectures
  • 6 sessions:
    • Physical and Theoretical Chemistry
    • Organic Chemistry
    • Polymer Chemistry
    • Analytical Chemistry
    • Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products
    • Food Chemistry
  • 5 minisymposiums:
    • Environmental Chemistry
    • Chemical Education
    • Green Chemistry
    • Chemometrics and
    • Cheminformatics

Exploitation of Environmental Chemistry via Low-cost Instrumentation and Microscale Chemistry.

Up to now, basically, the scientific content of those fields have been planned already.

Three Nobel Laureates have accepted to participate in the conferences, they are:

  • Prof. Jean Marie Lehn (Nobel Prize in 1987)
  • Prof. Riyoji Noyori (Nobel Prize in 2001)
  • Prof. Yuan Tseh Lee (Nobel Prize in 1986).

This is a rare opportunity for the participants. So the Organizing Committee will try their best so that all participants can attend the lectures of the pre-eminent scientists.

Besides the lecture of Prof. Nguyen Xuan Thuy, Vice Minister of Ministry of Industry, Chairman of the Chemical Society of Vietnam - "Development Strategy of Vietnam Chemical Industry to 2005 and the Vision to 2010", four scientists who have awarded by FACS in Dhaka Meeting (Bangladesh) will deliver the reports on their achievements:

  • For the 2003 FACS Foundation Lectureship: Professor Chi-Ming Che, the University of Hongkong
  • 2. For dishtinguished Contribution to Economic Advancement: Dr Tom Spurling, RACI, Australia
  • . For distinguished Contribution to Advancement in Chemical Education: Dr Charles Fogliani, RACI, Australia
  • 4. For FACS distinguished Young Chemist: Associate Professor Sally Brooker, NZIC, New Zealand

The symposiums and sessions of the 10th ACC cover a lot of significant social and economic problems. Especially, the symposium Environmental Chemistry deals with arsenic contaminated drinking water, dioxin and orange agent in the environment.

Perhaps, nobody knows the damage of arsenic as clearly as Indian people when there are millions of people in Nadia (West Bangan) being poisoned by arsenic in underground water or as Bangladesh- the West Bangan-like geological structure neighbor nation- which is suffering from arsenic crisis, the worst environmental disaster in the 21st century.

Perhaps, nobody knows orange agent and dioxin effects as clearly as Vietnamese people, when wide ecological areas of this country have been destroyed by orange agent, numerous victims are suffering from dioxin sequelae and the proportion of cancer sufferers is increasing.

However, this is also the concern of environmental activitists and of the world when food and the atmosphere are contaminated pervasively with dioxin from industrial waste.

The session Food Chemistry addresses a variety of "hot" problems in the world such as: food quality and safety, food export- import certification in international trade, terrorism and chemical weapons and food security...

This isn't only the scientists own problems but also of the world. It isn't random that the session Food Chemistry is planned to last 3 days and the symposium Environmental Chemistry is planned to last 2 days.

We hope that participants would benefit from those conferences.

In addition to the effort to organize the conferences successfully, NOC is also interested in organizing an excursion for participants to explore the beauty of Vietnam.

Recently, being considered as a safe place to come, Vietnam become the tourist destination. The number of tourists to Vietnam is increasing more speedily than before. Moreover, the attraction of Vietnam is natural beauty spots recognized as the World Natural Heritage by UNESCO such as Ha Long Bay, old streets such as Hoi An and other historical relics of the age-old culture.

In 2003, Vietnam tourism is promoting urgently foreign tourists attraction programs, Hanoi is in the process of preparing the Thousandth Anniversary of Thang Long in 2010, therefore, foreign scientists to Vietnam will enjoy an interesting trip.

NOC will use one afternoon in the conferences' program for an excursion so that participants can visit beautyspots and relics in Hanoi. NOC are going to co-operate with tourist agencies to organize tours for lovers of tourist.

The Chemical Society of Vietnam in particular and Vietnamese chemists in general will try our best for the success of the conferences .

Chairman of NOC
